On the 7^th December 2006, Leli Camilleri Zurrieq Primary ‘A’ from St. Benedict’s College, during the EkoSkola Seminar held at Pembroke, was awarded the Green Flag.  Zurrieq Primary ‘A’ is the first State School to win this prestigious environmental award

This scholastic year kicked off with the EkoSkola electoral campaign and EkoSkola elections.  It was extremely important to set up the EkoSkola Committee so that the work done the previous year could be continued and all the school could work towards achieving the Green Flag.  Projects that had been started the year before, such as the School Embellishment Project, continued with greater enthusiasm.  New projects were being proposed by the new committee to make Zurrieq ‘A’ a healthy school with healthy pupils.

At our school, everyone is encouraged to reuse, reduce and recycle.  During crafts, teachers and pupils use cereal boxes and other used material, creating wonderful art.  This way we all learn that new things can be created from the old, respecting nature and the environment.  We also collect used batteries and ink cartridges.  With the help of Wasteserv, we separate paper and plastic so that they can be recycled.  The School Embellishment Project was started last year and everyone at school was involved in planting our own plants to decorate the windowsills around the school.  This gave our school a greener and fresher look.  Thanks to our gardening teachers and the Zurrieq Local Council we reached all the objectives in this project.

Now we are working upon reducing paper consumption at school by finding ways we can minimize paper use for photocopying.  At school we are also undertaking the new project so hard, and it is an achievement that is well deserved by all.  The whole school worked as a team, from the School Administration, teachers, facilitators, and kindergarten assistants, clerks, cleaning staff, handyman, parents and above all pupils.
