During the 16th
century, when the population of Żejtun was about 1500, education in
the village was still inexistent. The only learned people in the
village were clergymen, and their level of education left much to be
desired. Education was not given too much importance as most of the
people worked on farms or cotton fields.
The first person ever to try to open a school in the village, during
the 16th century was
Father Gabriel Caruana. Unfortunately, research in hand does not
confirm if he was in fact given permission to open the school.
On the other hand, we have historic evidence that Father Alwiġ
Camilleri opened a school in 1819. The building of the school was
where the Convent
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands today. In 1838
the Colonial Government took over the school. Żejtun A Primary
School is named after this patriot from Żejtun.
During this period Ġużeppi Pulis Montebello, a politician and author
from Żejtun, published the book "Ktieb il-Qari", which was dedicated
to Father Alwiġ Camilleri.
The present building houses both Żejtun Primary B and Żejtun Primary
A. The school was officially opened on the 11th of June 1908. The
school was blessed by Bishop Pietru Pace while its Architect was Ġuże Pace from Żabbar, who based the school plans on a neo classical
style. To this day this building is still considered an architectural gem.

The first
Head of School was Salvatore Caruana. He was headmaster from 1908 to
1922.

During the
second world war the school was used as a hospital for injured servicemen.
After the second world war,
between 1955 and 1956 extension works were carried out on the same
neo classical style and twenty two classes were added to the school.
A Kindergarten section was built near the school in 1987.
Today, Żejtun Primary B is a school that caters for 302 boys and
girls
teaching
classes Years IV, V, VI and VII.
