ABOUT US:
Dun Karm Psaila School is a
Secondary School found at Zebbug and its catchment area is Siggiewi
and Zebbug, while students from Valletta and Floriana are being
phased out. Two years ago, our school joined forces with an Italian,
a Romanian and a Swedish school to work together in a Comenius
Project. A year later, a Spanish school joined us.
Ms. A. Gafà and Ms. V. Attard are working on
the project together with the help of other teachers, which helped
us or are helping us in different areas of the project.
THE PROJECT: it
is called “The Village: an echo of the square”, in which we are
analyzing various elements which make up the village. Obviously,
each country has its own elements. The project is being done over a
period of three years, where during each year, we are meeting
different targets.
MEETINGS: An
introductory meeting was held in Malta in the beginning, so as to
discuss and decide matters with regards to the project. During May
2005 Ms. A. Gafà and Ms. V. Attard attended a project meeting in
Cesano Maderno – Milan to continue discussing and taking decisions
about various aspects of the project.
WORK BEING DONE:
First step taken when the
title was decided, was to prepare guidelines of the targets to be
reached throughout each year as a whole team (all countries have to
reach the same targets together).
Then, teachers in charge decided the people whom should be
interviewed as they could help us with information collection and
also drew out what type of primary and secondary information was
needed. Students and teachers together done interviews to various
people like the Archpriests of Siggiewi and Zebbug; shopkeepers of
shops found at Zebbug and Siggiewi’s squares; Mr. Karmenu Vella and
Mr. Paul Aquilina, both well knowledgeable persons about Siggiewi’s history and Dun Salv Caruana very knowledgeable about
Zebbug’s history. Unfortunately, we are still awaiting appointments
to interview the mayor of Zebbug.
All the countries together worked to finalize a common logo, which
one can see on our website as well.
Also all countries are working on a common board game originally
designed to include all the squares of the participating countries.
A lot of other work is being done to produce our final products.
HISTORY:
Ħaż-Żebbug knows its
origins to Filippu Katanja who was in possession of the three
hamlets which later on formed the city of Zebbug: Ħal Dwin; Ħal Mula
and Ħal Muxi. The motto is ‘Semper Virens’ which means that it is
always full of green areas thanks to the fields and gardens and also
to the energetic population. Most probably the name’s origin has to
do with the large amount of Olive trees found in the area in the
past. ‘Citta De Rohan’ is named after the Grandmaster commanding
during those times.
The church which is found at the core of the square was built with
his own money and was dedicated to ‘San Filippu t’Aġġira’ in 1380.
The city is surrounded by natural frontiers mainly consisting of
well-defined valleys: Wied Qirda; Wied is-Sewda; Wied Baqqigħa; Wied
il-Ħesri and Wied San Martin. (Wied stands for ‘Valley’)
Monuments found are:
1.
The Silver Cross: found at the core of the square which shows the
mastering of the clergy of the lands;
2. Fontaine’s Eagle which was donated by the Governor Reid;
3.
A monument of Dun Karm Psaila found in Sciortino Street, which is
an extension to the square’s core;
4.
A monument of Mr. Paul Mifsud (Billiard’s World Champion in
1987).
It is said that the name Siggiewi comes from the surname of a rich
Sicilian family : 'Sageyo'.
As the church in the past was the most important thing for people,
the highest point of the city was chosen. The church which was
designed by Lorenzo Gafà, is found at the core of the square and is
dedicated to Saint Nicholas. At Siggiewi, one can find L-Armerija;
Palazz ta’ l-Inkwizitur; Kastell tal-Girgenti;
Salib ta’ l-Għolja; Limestone Heritage. A very important person
who was a doctor, architect, philosopher; scientist and linguistic
was Prof. Nikola Zammit MD.
