St.
Julian's (Maltese - San
Ġiljan) is a town in Malta situated along the coast,
north of the country's capital, Valletta. St. Julian's is a popular
town, usually flowing with tourists, especially during the summer
months.
The town, San Ġiljan is named after the patron saint of the town, Saint Julian, widely known as Julian the Hospitaller and also as Julian the Poor.
Before 1800 there was practically nothing standing in the area, today called St Julian's, except for Spinola Palace, the old church and a few fishermen’s huts and farmers’ dwellings dotting the countryside. In 1682 the small church which overlooks St. Julian's Bay was enlarged. In recent times the Lapsi church, as it is popularly known, became too small for the people living in St. Julians and in 1961 a new church was built and opened for worship in 1968. The Pope met the world of culture in this church during his visit to Malta in 1989.
