Ms Miriam Hohmann is the head of the school. There are
nine teachers in all. There are six teachers in charge of a class, assisted by Learning Support Assistants (LSA). Another
teacher, with a team of LSAs, is in charge of ICT, OptiMusic,
Multisensory and services provided for students
from mainstream. A teacher (trained in Halliwick), together
with other assistants, provide services in Hydrotherapy.
Moreover, peripatetic teachers of P.E., Music, Art and Drama
give services to the centre. Transition teachers visit the
centre and facilitate the move of students when they are old
enough to leave San Miguel. Two full-time nurses are always
available in the centre and a doctor visits the centre from
time to time and when necessary.
The paediatric physiotherapy department has been extending its services to the pupils at San Miguel
School for the past years. The physiotherapists provide
individual programmes for each child and attend
IEP sessions. Since the students needs are constantly changing, the physiotherapists regularly assess seating,
standing and mobility for each student and treat the full time students according to their individual needs.
They also liase with school staff including class teachers, pool staff and other professionals.
Physiotherapists are in constant contact with the parents and consultations are regularly carried out together
with the medical representatives regarding the ordering and fitting of equipment for home use.
Home visits are provided when necessary to assess the difficulties regarding accessibility and adjustment of home equipment.
A Speech Language Pathology service is available at San Miguel school. The Speech-Language pathologist aims at
promoting positive communication environment and provides individualized therapy programmes for the students to
improve their communication skills. Work in collaboration with ICT staff is also carried out for the training of
students to use Hi- Tech methods of Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices. Speech-Language services
also manage the feeding and swallowing abilities of each student. This is done through direct intervention with
the students as well as with the staff, other professionals, parents and carers.
