 SAN LAWRENZ
The village of San Lawrenz is located on
the far west side of the island of Gozo. Its population is about 550
and the patron saint is Saint Lawrence. Until May 1893 iSan
Lawrenz formed part of Gharb.
It was declared a
parish by a Pastoral Letter issued by Pope Leone XIII on March 15, 1893
which became effective on May 7 of the same year. The present church was
already built when San Lawrenz became a parish. The church was consecrated
by Bishop Gwann Maria Camilleri on April 28, 1889. The titular statue of
St Lawrence was manufactured by Louis Ramat who had just taken over the Gallard et Fils
company of Marseilles. The statue arrived in Gozo on
August 4, 1895 and was carried processionally to San Lawrenz from the
Collegiate of Gharb.
DWEJRA
From this village
one can proceed to Dwejra Bay, a magical attraction offering opportunities
of swimming in the inland sea or in the spectacular deep-sea, and also
have a unique experience of diving in the so called "Blue Hole" near the Azure Window.
Dwejra is also
home of the
Fungus Rock, as it is locally known as the Gebla tal-General,
which translates to General Rock. History tells us that a plant with
medicinal and healing properties used to grow on this rock and because of
this the rock was heavily guarded during the era of the Knights of
Malta.

Poem by Maria De Brincat (ex-teacher in

Dwejra

The days of my
childhood, Each summer spent in this water; So is my
youthful season Lavished in this resort caller.
What does attract my
fancy? The old high but artistic walls, The crib-like
cave in the bay, Or the pebbles around the shore?
Yes, they all attract my
fancy, With no slight exception at all; Even when the
sea is rough, And waves come with a dancing roll.
Then how much more proud I
feel, When the bay resembles the sky, And boats lounge
the calm waters, And a blue mantle is up on high.
