Fr. George Preca and the Society of Christian Doctrine

Museum SDC

The "M.U.S.E.U.M." is a Catholic Society officially called "Societas Doctrinę Christianę" (Society of Christian Doctrine) and its main aim is to give Religious Education to children and adults. This Society was founded by Fr. George Preca in Malta back in 1907. It still functions today in Malta and in some other countries such as Australia, England, USA, Kenya, Sudan and Albania.

The acronym M.U.S.E.U.M. was coined by Fr. Preca and stands for "Magister Utinam Sequatur Evangelium Universus Mundus", that is, "How I wish, O Lord, that all the World follows your Gospel."

The M.U.S.E.U.M. is composed of the Male and the Female Sections. Dun Gorg

The Venerable Fr. George Preca, known as "Dun Gorg", is the founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine. He was born in Valletta, Malta on the 12th February 1880, and passed peacefully away at St. Venera (Malta) on 26th July 1962.

Shortly after he was ordained priest in December 1906, he was struck by the tangible fact that many children recieved practically little religious instruction and no formation in the Christian life. He decided to do something about it and, early in 1907, he gathered around him a group of young men willing to dedicate themselves to teaching and Christian formation of the young.

They had nowhere to meet, no funds, no encouragement. But determination and a burning desire to serve God, and to live the Gospel in the world was to substitute for that.

The little group, inspired, guided and encouraged by this humble and holy priest, has now grown into a Society with some 120 branches and over 1100 members (men and women) who all embrace celibacy for the Kingdom of God. They are established in Malta, Australia, United Kingdom, Sudan, Kenya, and elsewhere.

The Society of Christian Doctrine is a living monument to the holiness and inspiration of Fr. George Preca. He was declared Venerable during 1999 and his beatification will be officially declared on 9th May during Pope John Paul II's Visit to Malta.
