Filippo Zammit and the
School.
Filippo
Zammit was born in Qrendi on the 21st August 1892. He was
the only son of Michele Zammit from Valletta and Marianna
nee Mifsud from Qrendi.
At
the age of 5years, he started his education at the Qrendi
Primary School. In those days the school premises were at
triq it-Torri.
He became an Apprentice
Teacher on 1st April 1903 when he was nearly 11 years old.
On the 4th July 1904 Filippo was promoted to the grade of
Monitor Teacher at the Zurrieq Primary School. In 1906
Filippo Zammit started his teacher training course. In those
days teachers were required to follow an eight year course,
attending the teachers training school in Valletta every
Saturday morning.
A new school was built in
Zurrieq Road, Qrendi, in 1915. Filippo Zammit was transferred
to this school where he remained till he retired.
In 1920, Dr. Laferla became
Director of Primary education. He encouraged teachers to
study for an Oxford certificate (General Certificate of
Education). Although married with four children Filippo
Zammit studied for this certificate he passed his Junior
Oxford Examination (O level) in 1923 and a year later passed
his Senior Oxford Examination (A Level).
On the 1st December 1924
Filippo Zammit was promoted to grade one Teacher and two
years later on the 1st November 1926 he became Headmaster of
Qrendi Primary School. He remained in this position for
twenty six years, until he resigned on the 21st August ,1952
at the age of 60 years. |
