The Online Primary ThemePacks (OPT) initiative is part of the Department’s ongoing Online Resources Scheme, designed to support teachers in their use of ICT and the Internet through the provision of various types of resources that can be used for lessons, activities and projects covering all aspects of the NMC. OPTs are designed to make the most out of Internet technology, providing schools with a quick access to updated material specifically constructed and collected by primary school teachers. The content of every OPT is therefore specifically aimed at particular age groups. OPTs are usually based on themes, and the primary school teacher can thus implement them in various curriculum subjects. OPTs can come in various forms. Some simply offer informative material that children can use in various class-based or school-based projects. Others complement the informative material by offering teaching aids that teachers can download, print and use in their lessons. All OPTs include ideas and tips on how they can be used in lessons and activities. OPTs can also give pupils the opportunity to submit their own material. Every OPT has its own web site, and pupils can contribute with their own writings and drawings, sharing their work online. They can access the OPT’s e-mail address to discuss topics and to send their work via e-mail attachments. Content material in OPTs is always fresh and up-to-date because they are online. For schools with slow internet connectivity, however, most OPTs include downloadable modules which can be installed on a server or a classroom computer. They can then be accessed without the need for any Internet connection. Any update to the online version of an OPT will always be included in the downloadable modules. All teachers are welcome to contribute in creating new OPTs. Upload your projects on the school’s or your own Schoolnet account, send us the URL address and your project will be listed in the OPT portal. Click the Contributions link for more details. |
