Go back to School Activites!

Eat Healthy! Think Healthy! Live Healthy!

On 4th April, we organized a Healthy Toast Day.  The children were enthusiastic about the idea they would prepare lunch for themselves and really looked forward to begin the activity.

We started the activity by showing the ingredients we need to do our cookery session.  The children showed their likes and dislikes while we were talking about the ingredients.  Healthy eating is essential for a better life style and I wanted to transmit this message to the children, rather than just performing the activity in itself.  We talked about the food pyramid, about what is healthy and what is less healthy.

All ingredients were displayed onto the table and the children wore their aprons to start doing the toasts.  Ingredients used were fresh whole meal bread, vegetarian cheese, low-fat spread, lettuce, carrots and tomatoes.

The toaster was switched on and we talked about safety measures we had to take.  They understood that electrical appliances present at home should not be touched without the presence of an adult.  We also mentioned that no knives nor any sharp object should be inserted in the toaster.  As the toaster was getting hot, I showed the grids to the children to show them how the toast would eventually be cookedWe also discussed the difference in the toast's texture before and after it would be inserted in the toaster.

It was nearly lunch time, when we were preparing our toasts.  We were feeling a bit hungry, while waiting for the toast to be ready, thus, we nibbled some lettuce to eat something good for our health.

The children spread some low-fat spread onto the toast with the aid of a round-edged plastic knife.  Children placed some lettuce, carrots and tomatoes onto their toast, together with a slice of cheese.  In the meantime, the other slice of bread was nearly ready and when the children finished off placing their salad onto the toast, the other slice of toast popped out from the toaster.  We spread the top slice, closed the toast and we were ready to eat our healthy toast for lunch.  The toast was served together with the pasteurized milk, which is served daily during break time.
