NINU CREMONA  b.1880    d.1972

Ninu Cremona, Son of Felix and Margaret nee Pace, was born in Victoria, Gozo, where he was to die at the venerable age of 92. He commenced his elementary education at St. Charles Collage in Tunis, from where he proceeded to Flores College, the Jesuits' College (Gozo), the Seminary at Floriana, where he befriended Dun Karm Psiala, and later, at 24 to the Ashton Hall School of Hygiene of Liverpool University. In 1928 he became Editor and translator of all Government publications and in the 1930's he was the first to be appointed teacher of Maltese at the Lyceum. He was also examiner in Maltese at the University.

X'inhu l-Malti Safi, a scholarly assay which Cremona published in 1925, best illustrates his attitude and meticulously balanced approach towards the proper study of Maltese language. In 1934 he published his Taghlim fuq il-Kitba Maltija, the standard grammar of the Maltese Language, and another more advanced edition a few years later.

On the 4th June 1940 the University of Malta conferred the D.Litt (Honoris Causa) on Ninu Cremona in recognition of his inestimable, if not inimitable, contributions to the promotion of Maltese culture, particularly to the scientific study of the Maltese Language. Thirteen years earlier he had been awarded the Gold Medal "Guze Muscat Azzopardi", while in 1970 the Malta Federation of Civic Committees honoured him with the Silver Medal. His wide academic interests ranged from philology and grammar to folklore and history, from biography and drama to poetry and prose. In each he showed competence, scholarship and mastery of language.
