| Our school is found on a
small island called
Malta and is situated in Marsaxlokk,
a picturesque fishing village. Many years ago, the 'old
school' was situated in
Zejtun Road. Only few children attended school in those days and the
very first teacher was
Ġużeppina Deguara.
As years went by, more children started attending school and so a new
school had to be built. A much bigger and modern school was
constructed in Arznell Street (the village school at the present), a
school which could cater better for the growing needs of the
village. This new school carries the name of Ġużeppina Deguara, the
very first teacher in Marsaxlokk. This decision was taken by the school
council
and shows its appreciation to the dedication which such person had for the teaching
profession. |

|
At present,
the school is made up of two blocks, the kindergarten block and the
main block. The kindergarten block is dedicated to the kindergarten
children aged from three to five years whilst the main block holds the
year one up to year six classes. There are two hundred and
fifty-five students attending school and there are
two streams in each year. The school population is not very high but
this turns out to be quite beneficial both for the
teachers and children. Having such a small population gives
both teachers and students the opportunity to get to know each
other better. Teachers can collaborate and co-operate together, to devise
schemes of work, plan lessons, organize school concerts etc. And above
all, teachers and students have greater opportunities to work closer
together and thus to enhance the personal interaction between them.
Our school is very well known for this warm atmosphere. Persons who
visit our school soon feel at home! The school has also two big
yards where children can play. One of these yards is used by the
lower classes (year one - year three) whilst the other yard is
used by the upper classes (year four - year six). The school is surrounded by beautiful
gardens which are very well taken care of. These gardens contribute to
making our school an enjoyable place where to learn and have fun
surrounded by the beauty of nature. |

The School Library |
|
|
The
library is a very modern one
since it was recently setup. In the library children can find various
interesting and wonderful books. Every year, the headmaster takes care that
new books are bought so that children can have access to the most new and
recent material available. The
local council too often gives us a helping hand by offering the school
money so that more books can be bought for the children. Moreover,
the library is equipped also with a computer with DVD feature, a printer, a scanner and
a television. The computer system was set up recently to enable
children to have access to the latest technology. The DVD-Rom feature
of the computer is very appealing to children since they are exposed
to another way of reading books.
Children go to the library with their class teacher once every week. The
teacher encourages children to borrow books for the library so as to enhance
their reading skills. Teachers often stay in the library for the literacy
hour where they can sit on the comfortable sofas and dive into wonderful
adventures with their students. Children can borrow books from the
library even during the Summer holidays when school is closed. The
headmaster made special arrangements with teachers and parents who
voluntarily offered to open the school library during the Summer holidays.

The Teachers' Resource Room |
|
|
| The
resource room is
equipped with a monitor, a music keyboard, and books and videos that
teachers can borrow for use in the classroom. There are also large tables
where teachers can prepare work for their class, and there are also chairs
and a white board so that lessons can be conducted in this
room as well. |

The Art Room |
|
|
| In the art room one can find all the
things needed for an art session - paint, paint-brushes, palettes etc.
The art teacher, Ms. Fenech Portelli, brings children over nearly every other week so
that they can have fun playing and messing around with paints whilst
creating wonderful pictures. Have a look at some of the children's
art work! |

|
The Kitchen |
|
|
| The
resource room is dedicated
mainly to cooking. In this room
there is all that children need in order to cook delicious food. Children usually make use of
this room during Art and Craft sessions
where, with the help of the teacher, children are encouraged to become
cooks! |
