The School

Until some years ago, Marsa had two primary schools, but in September 2000 they were amalgamated and now there is one primary school to cater for the children of Marsa.

The building dates back to 1924. Twenty years later the second floor was built because the school was too small for the population of the village. Presently the school has three floors. The primary school occupies the ground floor and some parts of the second floor. The other part of this floor and the third floor house the Opportunity Centre for girls. The two schools share many common parts of the building like stairs, school yard and the clinic.

The school is named after Mr. Lorenzo Balbi who was a benefactor and helped the people of Marsa in needy times. The classrooms are quite big and well lit and look mostly on Balbi Street. The school has a very large yard.

The school has a population of 310 children ranging between the ages of 3 and 11. Mr Carmel D'Amato is the head of the school. The staff of the school amounts to twenty five, which includes administrators, teachers, kindergarten assistants, facilitators and clerical personnel.

The school organises regular educational visits for all the children and encourages students to participate in competitions whenever the occasion arises. Every year we hold a Sports Day in which the whole school competes in several sport fetes. As of last year we started to hold a Prize Day, an occasion on which the school puts up items of drama, dancing and singing. On this occasion the school rewards students for achievement and progress, for best efforts and good behaviour. As educationalists we also like to involve the parents of our students. We hold meetings for them from time to time and we also organise sessions of Parenting Skills.
