Traditions, Folklore and History

On Thursday 6th June, St Benedict's was living one of the most wonderful moments in its school calendar. The theme for this year's Prize Day was a mixture of tradition, folklore and history.

As is customery, at Kirkop Primary, nearly all the pupils actively participate in all the various items presented on stage. Thanks to all the members of staff who have to work hard to prepare their pupils for the annual event while going on with the commitments of the curriculum. All this in line with the school's mission satement which aptly reads: "Winners are created, not simply identified".

The evening, presided by Parliamentary Secretary, the Honourable Dr George Hyzler, took off with the combined Kinder classes singing a medley of Maltese folklore songs that included Filghodu kmieni, Il-Karozzin, l-Vapur ta' l-Art, and Il-Banda ta' Indri. Then Year 1 reminded us of Maltese traditions such as the Bigilla street hawker and Tar-Rizzi as well as Tal-Pastizzi. Front seat guests were lucky enough to taste some of these items. Year 2 danced the traditional Maltese dance Il-Maltija with all the pupils becoming Zepp and Grezz, a couple wearing the Ghonnella, to help create the right environment. Year 4 presented the famous Katrin ta' l-Imdina while Year 6 ably played Mario Azzopardi's comedy Zebbug Mahruq ghal Belzebub. The concert was brought to its conclusion when Year 3 and Year 5 jointly played a historical representation entitled L-Eroj ta' Malta.

Particular thanks were aimed at Mr John Zammit, the music teacher, Mr John Camilleri, the Art teacher and Mr Anton Farrugia the drama teacher who all helped in their own particular manner prepare the students for such a successful evening.

St Benedict's also took the opportunity that evening to launch its school website on a big screen, purposely prepared for the occasion.

The Head of School, Mr Raymond Galea, in his address pointed out that success and a positive school ethos are the result of mutual respect, trust and co-operation. These three pillars form the foundations on which the school's excellent reputation is built.

The evening came to an end when Mr. Frans Borg, Director Office of Review at the Ministry of Education presented prize winners books and certificates for academic effort and achievement.
