ANTOINE 2 is my second tribute portrait to Antoine Camilleri. Perhaps it is deeper and more touching than the previous. From the research conducted, I learnt how Antoine loved portraying himself as an icon, as the Holy Shroud’s image and was deeply obsessed with eternal life after death. The face, almost a death mask, is a mixture of the artist’s own elongated and frail style amalgamated with a slight cubist rendition. The palette is dark and somber whilst the purple used in the background illustrates the artist’s favourite colour. In his own words, "I love purple because it symbolizes waiting... waiting for the Resurrection." Through his art, Antoine Camilleri definitely lives on... Keith Balzan
