Staff Development and SDP

During Staff Development Meetings, school administrations can organise ICT-based hands-on activities for all the teaching staff. These can be organised with the help of the ICT Peripatetic Teachers. Below are some recommended directions.

Click here to download the catalogue of talks and hands-on session on offer by the Primary Section of the DTiE.

Rationale

  • Promote further ICT awareness among teachers.
  • Give teachers the opportunity to learn more about the use of specific software through directed use.
  • Create tailor-made ICT activities specific to one particular staff.

Session types

There are two kinds of sessions that can be used for this purpose:
  • Half-day staff development meetings, usually lasting 1:30 hours, and taking place during school hours in the afternoon (13:00 to 14:30);
  • After school staff development meetings, usually 2:00 hours, and taking place between 15:00 and 17:00.
In the case of Afternoon Staff Development meetings, ICT Peripatetic Teachers are paid in the regular Animators' rate.

Procedure

  • Head teachers/administrators will inform their school PT about the date they wish to set for the sessions. It is important that PTs are informed of the date as early as possible (not less than three weeks) so that they may have the time to run the survey and set the activities.
  • The ICT PTs will make a short survey among the members of the staff. This will give them an idea of the kind os skills to be targeted during the session activities. This will also help them to divide the staff members into smaller groups.
  • The ICT PTs will inform the Centre of the intended sessions. If they see that further help may be required, Support Teachers from the Centre are also involved.
  • The ICT PTs may also suggest involving a member of the teaching staff as part of the Animators' group. This can be done in agreement with the school administration and the class teacher concerned.
  • The ICT PTs may also inform the administration about any extra setup required for the sessions. Class teachers are usually asked to provide their own laptops for the sessions.

Session content
Usually sessions will take the form of presentations, workshops or hands-on activities. Topics covered may include:
    1. ICT implementation in the primary: rationale
    2. A typical ICT day for a primary school teacher
    3. Internet safety awareness and the acceptable use policy
    4. Tour of the ICT Primary Sector websites and Gov.mt
    5. ICT Level Descriptors and Exemplars for the Primary Year Groups
    6. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for basic PC usage
    7. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for MS PowerPoint
    8. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for Kid Pix/Primary Writer
    9. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for Print Shop
    10. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for Drill-and-practice Software
    11. Skill Development Hands-on Sessions for using Internet
Upon arrangement with the school administration and teaching staff, development meetings may consist of a combination of any of the above items.
Usually Skill Development sessions will require the production of a pack that will serve as course material for the participants. The idea behind the pack is to provide teachers with backup notes that they can still refer to even after the sessions. Usually, depending on the preliminary surveys, the content of the packs will vary from one school to another.

The School website
Most schools are now on the verge of creating a school website as part of their School Development Plan. The involvement of the ICT Peripatetic Teacher in this matter is of course paramount, but please note that the roles of the ICT Teachers include other tasks, because of which they cannot be expected to by full-time webmasters for the sites. Our recommendations in this case include:
  • Form a website committee, including a member from the administration, the ICT Peripatetic Teacher and a class teacher who will volunteer to be the school's webmaster;
  • Once the school webmaster is identified, inform the ICT Learning Centre, so that FrontPage is installed on the teacher's laptop (or one of the administration computers, as the head teacher may prefer);
  • The ICT Peripatetic Teachers will give their suggestions re content, format, layout, etc.
  • If the webmaster is not familiar with the workings of FrontPage he/she may apply for the course Creating a School Website available as one of the regular Evening/Summer Courses offered by the ICT LC.
  • Once the website is completed, it should be uploaded on the school's SchoolNet website. The address should therefore start with: http://schoolnet.gov.mt/yourschoolname.
