ICT Peripatetic Teachers
The
following information is also available in the ICT Administrative
Policies document distributed to Primary State School head teachers
in May 2003. A copy of the full document is available in PDF format
in the Documents for download section.
Roles
The roles of the ICT peripatetic teacher:
A. Organise demonstration lessons to class teachers in order to
give practical examples of ICT implementation across all aspects
of the Curriculum. This implies that:
i. Demonstration lessons may cover any subject or topic covered
in the syllabus;
ii. The class teacher cannot leave the classroom during the demonstration
lesson. Head teachers are urged not to deploy the class
teacher in any other way during these sessions. Correcting
copybooks during the Peripatetic Teacher's lesson should also
be discouraged;
iii. Demonstration lessons are delivered as necessary where the
class teacher’s ICT technical and implementation skills
need support, but they are not intended to be the only ICT-based
lessons throughout the scholastic year. Class teachers
are still expected to integrate ICT in their own lessons when
the peripatetic teacher is not present;
iv. The class teachers are expected to participate in an active
way during these demonstration lessons.
B. Through these demonstration lessons peripatetic teachers will
support class teachers in:
i. Integrating software into their Schemes of Work;
ii. Planning lessons involving the use of ICT;
iii. Using software for their professional needs;
iv. Updating their teaching approach and methodology.
C. Peripatetic teachers will participate in school-based ICT-related
projects by contributing work or acting as consultants. As such:
i. Peripatetic teachers are expected to attend (and should not
be excluded from) staff development meetings whenever these fall
on the days the peripatetic teachers are on duty at school;
ii. Peripatetic teachers must be informed of any upcoming ICT-related
projects planned by the school, as early as possible
wherever their contribution to these projects is essential.
D. Peripatetic teachers will act as consultants for the creation
and maintenance of the school web site. This implies that:
i. Peripatetic teachers will be part of a committee for the
creation of the web site;
ii. Maintenance and update of the site will have to be carried
out by a fixed member/s of the school staff, referred to as the
webmaster.
iii. The Department will install FrontPage on the laptop of the
webmaster (or one of the office computers, as applicable). This
will facilitate creation and editing of the web site.
E. Peripatetic teachers will act as liaisons or contact persons
during ICT-related twinning projects between schools in Malta and
Gozo.
F. Peripatetic teachers will act as consultants for ICT-related
aspects in projects involving foreign schools (such as Comenius
projects).
G. Peripatetic teachers may also provide the first line of technical
support. This implies that:
i. Where problems related to software settings are involved,
peripatetic teachers will handle the problem;
ii. Where hardware (including cabling) and Windows-related problems
are involved, MITTS technicians will have to be contacted. It
is the responsibility of the administration or class teacher concerned
to log in a call with MITTS as soon as a fault is identified.
H. Peripatetic teachers will assist in organising and delivering
in-service and in-house courses for teachers.
I. When required to act as Animators (especially for after school
sessions), peripatetic teachers should be informed at least six
weeks in advance. This will enable them to develop work packs for
the specific school.
J. During after school staff development meetings, the peripatetic
teacher holding the sessions will be paid by the Department at the
normal rate for Animator. If a second peripatetic teacher needs
to be involved, this will have to be paid the same
rate from the school funds.
Deployment
A. Peripatetic teachers are deployed by the Department according
to a quota of classes, not schools. This implies that:
i. The peripatetic teacher’s frequency of visits per week
from one school to another may differ, depending on the school
population;
ii. Occasionally, peripatetic teachers may be called to attend
meetings at the ICT Learning Centre.
B. Peripatetic teachers’ demonstration lessons will gradually
be focused only on newly qualified teachers or teachers who are
new to the particular year group they are currently in charge of.
For this reason the presence of a peripatetic teacher in one particular
class may be required more than in other classes. It will be at
the Head teacher’s discretion to discuss this with the peripatetic
teacher and the class teacher accordingly.
