Housed in the formerly extensive
gardens of the (late) philanthropist Hookham Frere, this state school caters for
children from ages 3 to 10+. The fact that it is also built on the grounds of
the former state hospital in Malta does not deter the administration or the
teachers from doing their utmost, rather, this provides them with a challenge
to enhance as much as possible the school ethos.
The school is
divided in three
sections:
Kindergarten (Kinder 1 and
Kinder 2). This section is deemed by most to be the most important part as
it is the first point of contact with the school of children as young as three
years of age.
Infants Section: This
section caters for all children in Years 1, 2 and 3. It is a continuation of the
skills acquired in Kindergarten but with more emphasis, however, on formal
academic education.
The Junior Section: This
section caters for children in Years 4, 5 and 6. Years 4 and 5 provide a
platform of learning for year 6 where the children are expected to sit for the
highly competitive Junior Lyceum examinations, which will be their transition to
a secondary school.
There are about 250 students in the school.
The school, moreover, provides education to a number of children with special
needs, mainly psychological needs, together with some children of refugees.
The school staff includes a number of learning support assistants who take care of these
children.
