global education week

6 Billion - One Humanity
Our students get a clear idea that we are living in an unequal world through the various subjects on the curriculum. Themes as migration, poverty, world development, aid, environmental concerns are discussed in detail. However this is the first step that is awareness. In order for our students to be effective global citizens, not merely bystanders of what is happening at local, national and international level, they have to be given the opportunity to investigate and act on the conclusions that they themselves come up with.
At Guzeppi Despott Junior Lyceum students can take an active role during Global Education Week (GEW) and in other related co-curriculum initiatives on-going throughout the year as Global Action Schools, Connectando Mundos and Young Reporters. During this past year interested students attended workshops and seminars organised by local NGOs and SKOP the national platform for NGOs working on Global Education. During these events our youngsters were given the chance to speak their minds on how together we can contribute for a better world by making changes in our lifestyle so that those who are worse off on this planet can have a better present and future. Being able to stand up and face an audience of teachers and students coming from different schools is not something to be taken for granted. It is a big achievement for a student to gain so much confidence over a particular issue, which he or his team investigated, and then be able to explain his thoughts to others and convince them that the need for action is NOW!
This is the great thing about these Global projects in collaboration with the North South Centre of the Council of Europe and local NGOs as Kopin, Inizjamed, Graffiti, Koperattiva Kummerc Gust, Jesuit Refugee Services, Nature Trust and SKOP, they all give space for students to communicate and educate each other. The projects by the various schools participating in GEW07 included on this website clearly indicate the great input given through the collaboration of a good number of teachers and students in many cases on team work which overspills from the lesson framework onto the break and later on at home on an individual basis.
The main aim of this page (Thanks a lot Mr R. Spiteri) is not merely for display purposes but to encourage even more students and teachers to get involved and become effective Global Citizens now! If you feel that you want to do more to create a better world you can contact me by sending an email on the school address gdespott.bjl@gov.mt or on my official email rita.debattista@educ.gov.mt.
Our young people need to understand fully the causes of global issues and to picture a world where all the 6 billion+ living on our wonderful planet can lead a decent life. We can make positive moves together for a better world by adopting fair trade, support peace initiatives, fight stereotypes, believe in inter-cultural dialogue by accepting the diversity of cultures that exist even at our school level, and adopt environmentally friendly measures. The following teachers E. Lufi, M.Xerri, A. Psaila, M. Gatt & R. DeBattista were involved in the running of GEW07 and in the related initiatives at G. Despott (See 'Portfolio') All students are welcome to participate come next scholastic year.
"You must be the change you want to see in the world!"
