The first school in Fgura was opened on the 15th September
1944. It was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At that time, Fgura was a
rural area between Tarxien and Paola. Father Joseph Zerafa, a priest, took it in
hand to provide schooling for children who lived in the few scattered
farmhouses. He organised a small school in two garages in St. Simon Street. At
the time only 95 children were registered to attend school. This school building
was undoubtedly very limited in resources and hygienic conditions. It was 14
years later, in 1958, that a new school, designed by Architect J. Grech, was
ready to have its first intake of pupils. This was built on a plot of land
provided by the government of Malta. Due to an expansion in the Fgura
population further extensions were added to the original building which still
forms part of the school complex. Today, Fgura Primary B School, named after the
first headmaster, Emanuel Debono Decesare, hosts nearly 400 pupils from Fgura
and the neighbouring areas.
