English Section (Curriculum Department) at the Education Office

The Curriculum Department is presently represented at the Education Office in Victoria by a number of Education Officers. These include two officers for English, namely, George Camilleri and Frank Muscat. Together with other colleagues in Malta, they coordinate the teaching of English in the country. Although they are often away from their desks carrying out duties on the sister island, Mr Camilleri and Mr Muscat also offer their services at the Education Office.

Curriculum education officers cover a wide range of duties that include classroom observation, in-service teacher training, the writing of examination papers and of syllabuses, the holding of interviews, and the introduction of new texts and materials in schools. They also participate in meetings and seminars that are necessary for the coordination and smooth running of the education system in the country. From time to time, they are asked to read papers and to write reports on particular issues. In addition, they attend self-development sessions in Malta and abroad, consolidating their own expertise and looking for promising initiatives taking place abroad. In brief, they strive to support teachers and schools in meeting the requirements of the National Minimum Curriculum in those areas that are specifically curricular.

Education Officers visit schools to observe and support teachers in class, discuss related issues with the head of school, and participate in subject department meetings. They identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching and learning and suggest solutions for further development. They may also be invited to facilitate Staff Development Sessions. Although both Mr Camilleri and Mr Muscat focus on the secondary and post-secondary level, primary schools have also sought their services in such areas as text book evaluation, professional development sessions, and language practice. Both Mr Camilleri and Mr Muscat have long experience of English teaching. They have attended various seminars and training experiences overseas and also coordinated European projects in their field.

The two officers are more than willing to offer their services for the benefit of English teaching and education in general. Below are their contact details at the Education Office:
