Osmosis Through Potato Chips.
In this experiment, the students wanted to observe osmosis in potato chips. 1. What is osmosis? Osmosis is the movement of water from dilute to high concentration without energy. 2. Do potato cells have semi-permeable membranes? Of course, so they can allow water to move in and out.
The students cut 2 equal potato chips. They measured them. They placed one in water only, and one in water and a lot of sugar. After a few hours they measured the potato chips again. Results: The potato chip that was placed in water only increased in size. Why? The potato that was placed in water and sugar decreased in size. Why?
